Vikki True’s “French Twist” Cabaret

September 28, 2010

Great Barrington MA

Veteran Jazz vocalist Vikki True takes a fresh new turn in an upcoming benefit concert at the Berkshire Art Kitchen on October 9th.  French Twist, True’s all new cabaret will feature songs by Jacques Brell and Michele LeGrande as well as other composers from the period.  True has been working on designing this performance with David Case, one of her voice students, and the show promises to be an exciting departure from the repertoire Vikki True has been performing in the Berkshires of late.

The vocalist approached BAK director, Gabrielle Senza last spring to discuss the idea.  “One thing I REALLY want to do is another benefit for BAK and the work and education going on there” she states.  “I hadn’t asked for a date until now because I really didn’t know what I might want to do. Not the same things I do in clubs and not what I do in churches or temples – I’ve been making my life journey with singing and music as the lens through which I “see” the world.  A necessary semi-transparent cocoon, but one from which I’m struggling to metamorphose.”
“The thing I’ve been most excited about the last few years” True continues, “is the voice work I do with my private students, so what I proposed to Gabrielle is that David Case and I do a performance – a cabaret, if you will, for the benefit of BAK AND for our own enjoyment.  David worked with me in a cabaret class about a year and a half ago and started private lessons last winter. I got inspired at one of the lesson in the spring as we were working on some great stuff and began talking about Jacques Brell and Michele LeGrande. I LOVE these composers and have only been able to do them a bit over the years. Now I’m excited about performing again!”

Recognized for her powerful presence and voice, Vikki has performed folk, gospel, blues, rhythm and blues and jazz, though jazz is her greatest love.  She has shared the stage with Pete Seeger, and Rory Block and has opened for America and Josh White, Jr.  As a jazz vocalist she has appeared with Tommy Newsom, Eddie Harris, Groove Holmes, Michelle Hendricks, Arni Lawrence and Johnny Lytle.  She has opened for Spyro Gyra, Joanne Brakeen, Taj Mahal and Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson.

Her festival appearances include: The Kool Jazz Festival, Women In Jazz Festival, and The Derby Jazz Festival as well as The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and the Norwalk Folk Festival with her gospel group, The Sweet Sisters of Mercy, with whom she has released 2 CDs.
Her jazz CD, ’bout time was released in 2002 and True is currently working on another.  She performs jazz and cabaret around the country, leads workshops for CATA (Community Access to the Arts) and does benefits in her community to support the Rape Crisis Center, Women’s Health services, Hospice Care among others.  She was a featured performer in the Soul-Stirring Women in Music benefit event at BAK in 2009 for the Walk Unafraid Anti-Violence Project, an innovative program developed by Gabrielle Senza to help empower, educate and heal communities that are actively working to prevent abuse.

French Twist will start at 8pm on Saturday, October 9 at the Berkshire Art Kitchen (BAK).  BAK is an alternative art space dedicated to offering unique opportunities for creativity, connection and change.  BAK is located at 400 Main Street, Great Barrington and open by appointment and good fortune through the winter and spring.  Tickets are available online at or by calling 413.717.0031
